Health and Safety Directory

There are countless resources available online to help with everything related to health and safety,
from COSH and scissor lift training to risk assessment guidelines, you can find it all.
Sometimes it can be hard to pinpoint things specific to the needs of scenics and makers so we have
compiled a list of websites to help you quickly and easily find the best advice, we also have links to
more generalised health and safety associations and governing bodies.

HSE
The Health and Safety Executive is a national regulator for health and safety in the UK.
The website has a wealth of free information including a section dedicated to the entertainment and
eisure industry. The Working Alone guidelines will be informative and useful to many scenics and
makers and well as the guides to COSH and working at height.

BECTU
BECTU is a trade union providing membership to people who work in non-performance roles in live
events, broadcasting, film and cinema, digital media, independent production, leisure, IT and
telecoms, theatre and the arts.
The website provides free health and safety guidance through their “Get Support” section, including
help with working with hazardous substances, reasonable working temperatures and how to help
prevent slips and trips at work.

ABTT
The Association of British Theatre Technicians is an organisation for those within the theatre and live
events sector. They provide technical advice, consultations, training, publications and other
resources to their members through their website.

UK Theatre
UK Theatre is a membership group supporting organisations and individuals in the performing arts
sector. Members can access their Risk and Technical Safety page for help and advice, downloads and
other resources.

IPAF
The International Powered Access Federation is a worldwide organisation whose members include
manufacturers, rental companies, distributors, contractors and users of powered access equipment.
If you have been asked to undergo scissor lift or cherry picker training this is an excellent place to
find a training centre. The website also has a resource library of safety documents and guidelines.

SHP
The Safety Health Practitioner website is an excellent place to go for more general advice about
health and wellbeing in the workplace. The guidelines regarding noise in the workspace, skin safety
and control of dust and other hazardous particles are particularly relevant to the work of scenics and
makers.
